A Travellerspoint blog

Catchin' all ya'll up!!!

Okay, I know. I've totally been out of the loop with all of you guys. I came down with the flu 2 weeks ago so for one week I was sick and then the next week I was just straight up lazy. It's hard to get back in the flow of things after you've been sick. And I haven't been sick like that for at least 4 years. I'm surprised I wasn't sick for longer than a week, to be honest. I still have a gnarly cough but day by day it's goin' away a little bit at a time. But I will say that I am WAY over it.

So let's see.....what's new??? Well, last week I went to go see the Royal New Zealand Ballet perform Romeo & Juliet. It was amazing. And the girl who was Juliet is actually the choreographer for Kylie Minogue and for those who have seen "Finding Neverland" she was Queen of the Fairies in that. Quite a talented young lady. She was very good. The guy who played Tybalt was amazing as well. Very funny. I was 5th row from the front so I had a very good view. After that I had to go to work so that was a bit of a bummer but I was wide awake so that's good.

Speaking of work, it's going very well. Now that I've been working on my own for a couple weeks I'm way more used to the job and it's not as sucky as I first thought. Once you get your own routine going you find that the time goes by very fast and you can get things done quicker when you do them yourself. Everyone here is really cool. Sandy (my boss) always brings in her 2 dogs when she comes into work. They are the sweetest things. They are English Cocker Spaniels and one of them is a puppy that she just got. Here they are:

The white and orange one is Lucy and the black one is Jenny. They are so sweet!!! It makes me miss Molly, though!!! Oh, and here is Brian, the adopted hostel cat:

I think one day he jumped over the fence and wouldn't leave the hostel so everyone just kinda started feeding him and now he lives here. He's a sweetheart. And he's the only cat I've ever been around that will let you hold him like a baby and he won't jump out of your arms. I love it.

Here are my bosses at Charlie B's:

Sandy is in front. She is the hostel manager. Back left is Tracy who is the assistant manager and on the right is Kat who is the office manager. They are all very cool peeps. I'm getting to know the staff a lot better now and one of the girls (Jess) is coming with me to get my tattoo done. Oh yeah. I'm getting a tattoo. I've been wanting the tattoo for 4 years and I've been researching what I want done for 2 years. So a lot of thought has gone into it and I can't wait to finally get it. I can see my dad rolling his eyes now. I still love you, Daddoo!!! The guy who's doing it for me is apparently one of the top artists in New Zealand and has been tattooing for 21 years. He's opened 4 shops throughout his career and he's very well known. Everyone that I've talked to about him has said that they've heard of him and they've had friends tattooed by him and they said he's the best. I also heard through a fellow coworker that he actually tattooed someone from Lord of the Rings. (Craig Parker who played Haldir) Well, I took that as a sign that I should go with this guy. When I went in and showed him what I wanted and how I wanted it, he added on to it so much more and thought of things that I wouldn't have ever thought of for the tattoo. And it sounds incredible. I can't wait to see what he draws up for me!!! But I am way nervous, of course cuz he said that it could take up to 4 hours. EEK!!! I'm gonna have Jess take photos of me getting it done so you can all see me crying. No, I don't think I'll cry. I hope not. It'll be worth it in the end. YAY scarring your body for life!!!

Speaking of Lord of the Rings..........I met this girl who came in to stay at the hostel who is friends with some of the girls who work here. She was very friendly and easy to talk to and we ended up talking for like an hour after I was done working one day. The subject got on to tattoos and I mentioned how I was getting one and she asked what I was going to get. I happened to have a printed out picture of the Elvish Script that I'm getting and she goes "Is that Elvish???" and I was all "Yeah!!!" and she goes "Guess what job I had on The Lord of the Rings???" and I just stared at her and said "You worked on Lord of the Rings???" and she said "Yep, I was part of the airbrushing team and we airbrushed all the sets." and I said "All of them??? Even Weathertop???" She nodded. I freaked out and I said "Girl, we are going to go for coffee one day and I wanna hear stories!!!" She laughed and agreed. I got her email and I plan on getting in touch with her soon. She also said that she was supposed to work on King Kong but she had other things going on at the time. SO jealous!!! But she's super awesome. Her name is Kiri.

Right now, I'm in the office typing this up and waiting for my laundry to dry. I think I've pretty much filled you in on all the exciting stuff that's happened since I last blogged. Oh and as far as the rain goes, it's only rained once since the last blog I posted so the rain did eventually go away. But I've heard that it's supposed to come back again for like a week or so. Blah.

Love and miss you!!!

Rain, rain, go away.........

rain 30 °F

It’s pretty much been raining since I got back to Christchurch. The last 3 days it’s been raining non-stop. Annoying. Apparently there’s flooding going on further south so it’s probably good that I didn’t stay in Queenstown. It flooded really bad there while they were filming Lord of the Rings and they had to hold off shooting in that area. People who lived there were rowing kayaks in the street. Crazy. You can see it on the making of documentaries on Return of the King. It’s really cool but crappy at the same time.

I’ve had the last 3 days off so I’ve pretty much been walking around getting myself familiar with the city. I know it pretty well by now. Of course, it’s always raining when I go out. I finally invested in an umbrella. It’s black and has the New Zealand fern on it and it also says “New Zealand” underneath it. It’s not bad for 10 bucks. But I really have to watch my money now ‘cause I thought that I would be getting paid every week but at this job they get paid every other week. So I won’t get paid until a week from Tuesday. But that’s okay. I pretty much have almost everything I need I just need to get a few more groceries and I’m good to go.

I’m all settled into my flat now. It’s not bad. It has everything I need. The only thing I don’t like is that it’s absolutely FREEZING inside. It’s colder inside than outside. They have a portable heater in one of the rooms and it gets the room really nice and toasty so I pretty much just stay in that room. And thank God for my laptop ‘cause they don’t have a TV in here. My boss said it’ll be getting one soon but I think I would probably kill someone if I couldn’t watch my movies.

Speaking of which, I spent the last 2 days re-watching The Office. I forgot how much I love it. And it made me cry at the end. I hadn’t cried at it since the first time I saw it. But since I hadn’t watched it all for a long time it was very emotional. It has the happiest ending ever!!! I love Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. They are geniuses. And if it wasn’t for them, there would be no American Office so all you people who watch the American one and haven’t seen the BBC version..........get in on that!!!

I finally found a place that carries my favorite magazine. “EMPIRE”. It is, by far, the coolest movie magazine in the world. Surprisingly, it costs just as much as it does back home so that’s good for me. It’s 10 bucks back home and I thought for sure that it would be double that. But luckily, for me, it isn’t. It has Batman on the cover. Which I have not seen yet so no one ruin it for me. I will get around to seeing it eventually. Oh, speaking of new movies, I saw the trailer for the next Harry Potter and it looks AWESOME!!! I cannot wait to see it. Only 4 more months, YAY!!! And it’s the same director as the 5th film which is really good ‘cause I think the 5th film really kept the spirit of the books even though they had to cut out so much of it. So did the 3rd one but the 5th one is my favorite. Hmmm, maybe I’ll watch Harry Potter tonight.

I go back to work tomorrow night and work 2 nights after that. Then I have 2 days off and go back 4 nights after that. Blah. When I go back for the 4 nights it’ll be my first shift completely on my own. Scary. The job is easy but there is a lot of work to get done in a small amount of time. It’s a lot of cleaning and it has to be done by 6 am. But it’s a really good work out so at least I’ll be getting my exercise. Not that I haven’t gotten enough already walking around everywhere.

K, well I guess that’s all for now. I miss you guys and I think about you all the time. Take care!!!

Goodbye Oamaru.............and good riddance!!!

rain 30 °F

Hi and hello!!!

Sorry I haven't updated in so long. I had very little internet access the past few days. But let me fill you in on what's been going on.

This last Saturday, there was a band that came to stay at the backpacker's that I was at. And they happened to be playing at The Penguin Club that night. I figured that would be a good thing to go and do since I hadn't really done anything in that town at all. There was another girl in the lounge talking to the band and we decided to go to the club together. She's a very lovely girl. She's from Dunedin and her name is Selina. I thought I was going with someone around my own age but was surprised to find out that she was actually 42. The years have been kind to her. She was good company for the evening.

When we got to the club we grabbed a seat and waited for the band to start. The band's name is "Bunnies On Ponies". Classic. They were really good!!! So good, in fact, that Selina and I danced to a few of the songs. We met a guy sitting behind us named John. He told us a bit about the band. The lead singer is part of another band called "The Phoenix Foundation" which apparently is pretty famous in New Zealand. They have a music video on TV and everything. He also told us that the lead singer wrote the music for the film "Eagle Vs. Shark" which I absolutely loved and it stars Jemaine Clement from The Flight of the Conchords. The music in that film is awesome. Check it out if you haven't already!!! So, hearing that, I just HAD to buy their cd and have the guys sign it. They were really cool. They are actually from Wellington so when I head back up there I'll have to go to some more of their shows.

The Penguin Club itself was really cool. It's one of those small bars that barely fits anyone and it's really famous in New Zealand for bands to come and play at. It's seriously hidden behind all these old buildings. It was kinda hard to find. But the good thing was that it was really close to the backpacker's.

After that we headed over to a place called "Fat Sally's" for a drink. Here's the cool thing. The owner is a fat chick named Sally. How cool is it that she is so confident in her own body that she would own a bar and name it after how she looks??? That woman ROCKS!!! It's a pretty nice place and they have really good food.

After THAT, we headed over to Oamaru's "nightclub". I walked in and just laughed. It reminded me of the really crappy bars in San Diego that have dance floors. It was classic. It was called "The Globe". It's also above a bank. Awesome.

After that, we called it a night. The next day I met up with John again and we had some pizza at Filadelfio's cuz it's so awesome. Then we went to his house and watched some Family Guy cuz he is also a big fan. We quote it all the time.

So, that's basically it. Then today I got on the bus around 3 and arrived in Christchurch around 7. I was so glad to leave that place behind. I strongly dislike it.

Now I am at the backpacker's that I will be working at. It's really nice. I start work on Sunday. HOORAY!!! Money for Sara. I'll be here for the next month which will give me time to find a job in Wellington. Cuz I think that is where I'll be heading next.

That's all for now, talk to you all soon!!!

Almost outta here.......

rain 45 °F

Hello, my friends!!!

Well, the last 2 days I relaxed and did nothing. Oh, wait. I've been doing that since I got here. *Peter Griffin laugh*

Last night, I went to my local grocers. I needed some toothpaste. I was shocked to see the prices for floss. Nearly 5 bucks. FOR FLOSS!!! Come on, people. All I want to do is get the crap out from in between my teeth. Is that too much to ask??? Apparently, it is. And then I go to the milk section and I see that a gallon of organic whole milk is $3.50. Go figure.

So, I've been doing a lot of job searching. I can't decide if I want to head up to Christchurch again or just go to Wellington. I've seen online that they have way more work available in the area that I want as opposed to Christchurch. But I just don't know. So many choices!!! I'm thinking the best thing to do would be to go to Wellington, stay there until gets warmer and then head further north to check out all the cool tropical beaches that are supposed to be superb. I really want to go to the Bay of Islands and Coromandel. And Lake Taupo. Those places are supposed to be way awesome according to locals and other backpackers I've talked to. Maybe I'll do that.

I still need to get a bank account set up and some kind of cell phone. I'm gonna take care of that stuff on Monday as that is my last day in this GOD FORSAKEN TOWN. Honestly, if I knew that all of New Zealand was like this town, I'd go see all the Lord of the Rings stuff and then head home. Cuz that would be all that is worth seeing. Now I wanna go do that horse trek thing again. That was fun.

Today it rained. It's freezing outside. Maybe it's a good thing to head north. In Wellington it's 10 degrees warmer. And there's also TONS of cafes. How those 2 are related, I don't know. But I thought it should be mentioned.

In other news, I'm more than positive that I saw the rugby guy again. And I think he recognized me, too. Cuz I was foolishly wearing the same outfit that he saw me in last time that I walked past him and it's not easy to forget my super awesome Boba Fett zip-up hoodie. Anyways, he's gorgeous.

Today I've been working on my resume to get a job. They are totally gung-ho on resumes and cover letters here. Annoying. Whatever happened to applying online or filling out an application??? Since I didn't need one in the states I had to start from scratch. I think it turned out pretty well. I have a few things I need to tweak here and there but all in all it's not bad for my first one.

You know what??? I love my laptop. It's so awesome. I could seriously type on this thing all day. It's the most amazing thing that the Lord Jesus ever created.

Okay, well, I hope all of you back home are doing okay. Most of you have probably already seen The Dark Knight and for that reason you suck because it doesn't come out here until next week. But I have heard that Heath Ledger is amazing. Now, is he amazing because he died before the film's release or is he amazing because he truly is??? Something to think about...........

Right now I am sitting inside what has become my favorite place to go and eat. "Filadelfio's". I'm the only one in here and I'm sitting on a couch right next to the fire and it's so relaxing!!! I could stay here all day. But I won't. But it really is super chill in here. By far one of the coolest places I've seen in Oamaru. The Slough of New Zealand. For those of you who have not seen the BBC version of The Office you would not get that reference. And shame on you for not having seen it, go out and get a copy NOW!!!

Anyways, on Sunday (which would be Saturday for all you losers) I went for a walk in the gardens that are right next to the hostel. They were nice. I met some friends:

Aren't they cute?!?!?! I love ducks!!! Here's another view of the garden:

It's not that great, to be honest. But the ducks make up for it:

I love it. Then I walked up a bit further and I came to the beach. I was hoping to see some penguins but it wasn't in the cards that day. Here's what I got:

And I cut out all the crap that was surrounding the area. It isn't as nice as it looks in those pics. I'm just really good with a camera. Hey Spielberg, if you ever get sick of your current cinematographer, I'm your girl.

So check it out. Afterwards I went to a cafe to get something to eat and this guy walks in and he is just drop dead beautiful. Then I realized that everyone was looking at him and then the cafe owner comes out and says "Sorry about the game the other day, Richie." Then a few minutes later he drags one of the workers out with him to this guy and says to him "She wants an autograph but she's really shy." It was funny. So I was like, okay this guy must play for a New Zealand team. And he did. But not only that, he is the captain of the New Zealand rugby team "The All Blacks". After being in New Zealand for 2 weeks now, it isn't hard to see that Kiwi's are absolutely crazy for this team. They have merchandise EVERYWHERE!!! But OMG, this guy is hot. Check it out:

And Oamaru is his hometown so that would be why he was there. But wow. Yum.

Anyways, I haven't really been doing much here lately. Other than going to cafes and surfing the net. It actually kinda sucks cuz nobody really cool has checked into the hostel since I first got here. Darn backpackers. So boring.

Well, that's all for now. Nothing's been going on so there's nothing to talk about!!! Don't you wish you were me???
